First checks for almost every problem
- Close
WoW-Mania.exeand the launcher completely. Check Task Manager for processes that are still running. - Make sure the launcher and the game have been fully extracted from their ZIP files. Do not run either program from inside a ZIP/archive window.
- Keep the game in a normal writable folder such as
C:\Games\WoW-Mania. AvoidProgram Files,Windows, OneDrive-controlled folders, network drives, and read-only external media. - Confirm that there is free disk space and that the computer's date, time, and time zone are correct.
- Add the official launcher and WoW-Mania game folder to the antivirus allow/exclusion list if files are being blocked or removed. Do not disable security software permanently.
- Start the launcher, select the correct game folder, and use Verify Files. Then use Clear Cache if the problem occurs after pressing Play or entering the world.
- If the problem continues, attach
Launcher.logwhen contacting support. It is normally beside the launcher. If that folder is not writable, it is stored under%LOCALAPPDATA%\WoWManiaLauncherNext\Launcher.logon Windows.
Installation and launcher startup
1 The launcher does not open at all. What should I do?
Make sure the package is fully extracted, then check whether Windows Security or another antivirus quarantined Launcher.exe or LauncherUpdateHost. Restore only files downloaded from the official WoW-Mania source and add the extracted folder as an exclusion. Try launching once with Run as administrator. If that works, move the launcher and game to a writable folder such as C:\Games\WoW-Mania so administrator mode is not normally required.
On Linux or macOS, ensure both launcher files are executable:
chmod +x Launcher LauncherUpdateHost
2 Windows says the app is unrecognized, blocked, or potentially unsafe.
Confirm that the file came from the official WoW-Mania download. Open the file's Properties and use Unblock if Windows shows that option. If SmartScreen appears, inspect the publisher/source before choosing More info. If antivirus detection persists, send the detection name and file hash to support rather than downloading random replacement files.
3 The launcher opens from the ZIP but later fails or loses its settings.
Extract the complete package to a permanent folder first. Running from inside a ZIP creates a temporary/read-only environment and prevents reliable self-updates, settings, logs, and helper execution.
4 The launcher opens and immediately closes or crashes.
Check Launcher.log, antivirus quarantine history, available disk space, and folder permissions. Download a fresh full launcher package if a file is missing. Keep Launcher.exe and LauncherUpdateHost together. If the log is not beside the launcher, look in %LOCALAPPDATA%\WoWManiaLauncherNext.
5 Can I place the launcher in `Program Files`?
It may run there, but updates and game-file changes can be blocked by Windows permissions. C:\Games\WoW-Mania or another user-writable local folder is recommended. Moving the folder is usually better than permanently running everything as administrator.
6 Can I run the launcher from OneDrive, Dropbox, a network share, or an external drive?
It is not recommended. Sync locks, Files On-Demand placeholders, network interruptions, unusual permissions, and slow removable media can cause failed writes or repeated downloads. Use a local NTFS/APFS/Linux filesystem folder where possible.
Finding and validating the game
7 The launcher says “No valid WoW-Mania.exe folder selected.”
Select the game’s root folder—the folder that directly contains WoW-Mania.exe—not Data, WTF, or a shortcut. The executable must be named WoW-Mania.exe and must be the supported WoW-Mania client version. A retail client, another private-server client, an incomplete download, or a renamed executable will be rejected.
8 I selected the correct folder, but it is still reported as invalid.
Check that WoW-Mania.exe exists and was not quarantined, is not zero bytes, and has not been replaced by another client build. Fully extract the client, restore the official executable if antivirus removed it, and select the root again. If the executable version cannot be read or does not match the expected version, obtain the current official client.
9 The launcher keeps asking me to select the game folder.
The saved path may no longer exist, the drive letter may have changed, or the settings file may not be writable. Re-select the folder and close the launcher normally so it can save. Windows settings are stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\WoWManiaLauncherNext\settings.json. If that file is damaged, rename it while the launcher is closed and let the launcher create a new one.
10 The launcher detected the wrong language/locale.
The client locale is detected from folders such as Data\enUS, Data\esES, or another installed locale. Select the launcher language you want, but do not point an English patch set at a client whose installed locale is different. If the locale folder is missing or mixed with files from another client, repair or reinstall that locale from the official client package.
Permissions, read-only files, and locked files
11 I see “Cannot write realm configuration” or “Realm could not be changed.”
Close the game. Ensure the game folder, WTF\Config.wtf, and Data\<locale>\realmlist.wtf are writable. Remove the read-only attribute, move the client out of Program Files, and check antivirus Controlled Folder Access. Running the launcher once as administrator can confirm a permissions problem, but correcting the folder permissions/location is the lasting fix.
12 The launcher keeps changing or recreating `realmlist.wtf` and `Config.wtf`.
That is expected: the launcher writes the selected WoW-Mania realm address to both files. If another launcher, manual edit, sync tool, or security product reverses the change, stop using the conflicting tool and let the WoW-Mania launcher manage these values.
13 The update says to close WoW-Mania even though the window is gone.
WoW-Mania.exe may still be running in the background or a file may be held by antivirus, backup, indexing, or sync software. End the game process in Task Manager, wait briefly, and retry. If necessary, restart the computer and run the launcher before opening any other WoW tools.
14 The launcher cannot close an already-running game process.
Close the game normally first. If it is frozen, use Task Manager with the same Windows user/elevation level as the game. A launcher running without administrator rights cannot always terminate a game started as administrator, and the reverse elevation mismatch can also interfere with automation.
15 Why is the update check skipped while the game is running?
Updating MPQ or executable files while the client is using them risks corruption. Choose Close and check to close the game and update, or Skip check only if you accept playing that session without validating current files.
Launcher self-update problems
16 “Launcher update failed” appears.
Check internet access, free space, antivirus, and write permission to the launcher folder. The launcher must download the update, verify its SHA-256 hash, copy LauncherUpdateHost to a temporary folder, replace the installed files, and restart. Any blocked step can fail. A fresh full launcher ZIP from the official source is the safest manual recovery.
17 The launcher says the updater helper is missing.
LauncherUpdateHost must be beside the launcher. Antivirus may have removed it, or an old launcher-only package may have been extracted incompletely. Download and extract the current full launcher package; do not copy only Launcher.exe over an old installation.
18 The update downloads, closes the launcher, but the old version returns.
The updater could not replace files because the folder is protected, a launcher process is still running, or antivirus blocked the helper. Move the launcher to a writable local folder, close duplicate launcher processes, allow both launcher executables, and retry. If necessary, extract the latest full package into a new folder.
19 The launcher repeatedly asks for the same launcher update.
The updated executable is not being installed or retained. Check the displayed/version log, folder permissions, antivirus quarantine, duplicate copies/shortcuts, and whether a shortcut points to an older folder. Remove obsolete shortcuts and launch the newly extracted copy directly.
20 The update reports a SHA-256/hash verification failure.
The download was incomplete or altered in transit/on disk. Retry on a stable connection, disable problematic proxy caching, check disk health and antivirus actions, and download the official package again. Do not bypass hash verification.
21 A required launcher update is offered and the launcher closes when I decline.
This is expected for a mandatory release. Install the required update or download the latest full package manually. Old versions may be incompatible with current session registration or patch services.
Game update and patch problems
22 The launcher is stuck on “Checking for updates” or hashing files.
The first scan can take time, especially on a hard drive, external disk, or antivirus-scanned folder. Close the game, leave the launcher running, and watch for file names/progress. If there is no activity, check Launcher.log, disk usage, drive health, permissions, and security software. Moving the client to a fast local drive helps.
23 It says “Server Offline. Retrying in 30 seconds.”
The launcher could not retrieve the patch manifest or a patch file. Check the WoW-Mania status/Discord announcements, then test without a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or HTTPS-inspecting antivirus. Allow the launcher through the firewall. The launcher retries automatically; a realm shown offline does not by itself prove the patch server is offline.
24 A download is slow, stops, or restarts.
Use a stable wired connection if possible, stop bandwidth-heavy downloads, and ensure the destination has enough free space. VPNs, captive portals, proxy inspection, packet loss, antivirus scanning, and a sleeping external drive can interrupt large files. Restarting the launcher is safe; it checks existing files and downloads files that do not match.
25 The launcher downloads the same patch every time.
The local file is missing, changed, locked, or does not match the official MD5 hash. Common causes are antivirus quarantine, unofficial patches, a read-only/protected folder, disk errors, sync software, or launching a different copy of the client. Use Verify Files, inspect the named file and antivirus history, confirm the selected game path, and remove conflicting third-party patches.
If the files are correct but scanning behaves strangely, close the launcher and rename %LOCALAPPDATA%\WoWManiaLauncherNext\patch-hash-cache.json; the next scan will rebuild it.
26 The launcher reports missing or corrupt files.
Leave the game closed and let the normal update check download the managed files again. Ensure adequate free space and write permission. If corruption returns after repair, check antivirus, disk health, RAM stability, and whether another patcher modifies the files.
27 “Unknown MPQ files” are reported.
The verifier found patch-*.MPQ files that are not in the current WoW-Mania manifest. These may be obsolete, unofficial, or from another server/client. Move the named unknown MPQs to a backup folder outside the game, restart the launcher, and verify again. Do not remove official files blindly; keep the names shown by the verifier for support.
28 The launcher reaches 100% but the game is still not correct.
Use Verify Files for a full managed-file check, then Clear Cache. Confirm that your shortcut and launcher both point to the same client folder. The updater validates files it manages; addons, saved variables, graphics drivers, and unrecognized third-party files can still affect the game.
29 I do not have enough disk space.
Free space on both the game drive and the operating system's temporary drive. Launcher self-updates are downloaded and unpacked under the system temporary folder before installation, so free space is required there even when the game is on another drive.
Cache, night patch, and client options
30 “Cache could not be cleared” appears.
Close every WoW-Mania process. Ensure the Cache folder is writable and not held by antivirus or sync software. Delete only the game's Cache folder manually if needed; do not confuse it with WTF or Interface, which contain settings and addons.
31 The Clear Cache button is disabled.
The selected installation has no Cache folder. That is usually harmless—the game creates it when needed. Verify that the correct game folder is selected.
32 Should I clear the cache after an update?
Yes, when instructed by a patch notice or when you see stale data, incorrect models, interface errors, or login/world problems after a patch. Cache deletion does not remove characters, account data, addons, or saved settings.
33 The night-time patch cannot be enabled or disabled.
Close the game and verify write permission to the Data folder. The launcher switches patch-4.MPQ and patch-4._MPQ; antivirus, a read-only attribute, a missing file, or another program holding it can block the rename. Run Verify Files if the patch file is missing.
Account, realm, and launcher-session problems
34 The launcher says “Select or enter an account before launching.”
Choose an account found under WTF\Account or type the account name. Use the WoW-Mania account/login name—not a character name or email address.
35 My account does not appear in the account list.
The list is built from folders under WTF\Account. Type the account name manually, or log in once so the client creates the folder. Make sure the launcher is pointed at the same client you normally use.
36 “Failed to register launcher session” prevents the game from starting.
Session registration is required. Confirm internet access to the WoW-Mania website/API, correct account spelling, current launcher version, and firewall/antivirus permission. Disable VPN/proxy filtering temporarily for testing and check Launcher.log for an HTTP status or response error. If the service itself is unavailable, wait for a server announcement or contact support with the log.
37 The launcher says my computer date/time is incorrect.
Enable automatic date, time, and time-zone synchronization, press Sync now, then restart the launcher. Signed launcher requests use timestamps; even a relatively small clock difference can cause clock_skew rejection.
38 The launcher starts the game, but the server says I did not use the launcher.
Always press Play in the current official launcher and use the same account that you then log into. Do not start WoW-Mania.exe directly, switch to another account at the login screen, run an outdated launcher, or leave a very old game session open. Confirm the session registration success message before the game starts. Network/IP changes caused by VPN reconnects can also invalidate server checks.
39 The launcher warns that my account is not verified.
Complete account/email verification through the official WoW-Mania website. Some realms may allow you to continue with a warning; verified-only realms disable Continue until verification is complete. Restart the launcher after verifying if the local status has not refreshed.
40 The selected realm is wrong or the game connects elsewhere.
Select the realm in the launcher and allow it to update realmlist.wtf and WTF\Config.wtf. Fix any permission error. Remove manual realmlist changes and avoid other launchers that overwrite the files. Test realms intentionally show a confirmation prompt.
41 The launcher shows Login Server or World Server as Offline.
Press Refresh and check official status announcements. Status/news retrieval, the login service, and the world service are separate; one can be unavailable while the others work. If other players can connect, check local DNS, firewall, VPN, router filtering, and ISP routing before repairing game files.
42 I can reach the login screen but cannot authenticate.
Check account name/password, Caps Lock, account verification, bans/locks, and whether the login server is online. The launcher can register a session and start the client, but it cannot correct an invalid password or account restriction. Use the official password-reset/support flow.
Saved password and automatic login
43 “Password could not be saved” appears.
On Windows, saved passwords use Windows Credential Manager. Enter a non-empty password, ensure the Credential Manager service and user profile are working, and avoid running the launcher under a different Windows account. Password storage/automatic entry is not available in the same way on non-Windows platforms.
44 The launcher displays `********`; is that my real password?
It is only a mask indicating that a password is stored. The launcher does not put the real saved password into the visible box. Typing a new value replaces the stored password when Remember password is enabled.
45 “The saved password could not be entered automatically.”
The game may have opened slowly, in an unexpected display state, behind another window, or with different administrator privileges. Wait for the login screen and enter the password manually. For best results, run the launcher and game at the same privilege level, avoid clicking during startup, and do not minimize or move the game until entry completes. The automation can wait up to about 45 seconds; failure does not mean the saved password is necessarily wrong.
46 Remember Password is disabled on Linux or macOS.
This is expected. The current secure password store and login automation are Windows-specific. Enter the password in the game or use the facilities provided by your Wine/CrossOver environment at your own discretion.
Game startup problems
47 “WoW-Mania.exe could not be started.”
Read the detail shown beside the message and in Launcher.log. Check that the executable still exists, the folder is writable, antivirus has not blocked it, and Windows can run it. Re-select the client folder and use Verify Files. On Linux/macOS, also verify the configured Wine/CrossOver runner.
48 The game starts directly but not through the launcher.
Check session-registration errors first, then elevation mismatch and antivirus rules for the launcher. Starting directly is not a valid workaround where launcher sessions are mandatory. Put the launcher with the official package files in a writable folder and press Play after session registration succeeds.
49 The game is already running prompt appears unexpectedly.
The launcher detected a WoW-Mania.exe process from the selected game folder. Check Task Manager for a minimized, frozen, or disconnected client. Processes from a different WoW folder should not normally count, so confirm the selected installation path and attach the log if detection is wrong.
50 The launcher closes after the game starts.
Disable Close launcher when game starts. This is a saved preference, not a crash, if the game opened successfully.
51 The game opens with a black screen, crashes, or shows graphics errors.
First clear the game cache and verify files. Then test with addons disabled by renaming Interface and WTF temporarily, update the graphics driver, and reset incompatible display settings. These are generally client/driver problems rather than launcher-update problems; keep backups because WTF contains account and UI settings.
Linux and macOS
52 The launcher works, but the Windows game does not start on Linux/macOS.
Install Wine, CrossOver, or a compatible runner. If none is auto-detected, set GameRunnerPath, GameRunnerArguments, and optionally WinePrefix in settings.json. The default Linux command is wine WoW-Mania.exe. If the log says the configured runner was not found, correct the path or ensure the runner command is available in PATH.
53 My runner path contains spaces or needs special arguments.
Use the JSON settings fields and place {exe} or {0} where the quoted game executable should be inserted. If no placeholder is present, the launcher appends the executable path. Check JSON quoting carefully and inspect Launcher.log for the resolved runner path.
54 macOS says the launcher cannot be opened or is quarantined.
Confirm the download is official, extract it fully, grant execute permission, and approve it in macOS Privacy & Security if appropriate. Gatekeeper/quarantine policy is separate from Wine/CrossOver; after the launcher opens, a compatible runner is still required for the Windows game client.
News, statistics, and links
55 News or images are unavailable, but Play still works.
News, images, status, patch downloads, and game services use separate requests. Press Refresh, check internet filtering, and allow HTTPS access to the WoW-Mania website. Missing news alone does not mean the realm is down.
56 Account Statistics says it is unavailable or shows no characters.
Select/type the correct account and realm, then retry. The statistics API may be temporarily unavailable, or the account may genuinely have no characters on that realm. This feature failing does not normally prevent Play unless session registration also fails.
57 Website, Discord, video, or character links do not open.
Check that the operating system has a default browser and permits the launcher to open web links. Browser/ad-block/security policy may block embedded video while normal external links still work. Open the official website manually if necessary.
Getting help
58 What should I send to support?
Send:
- The exact message shown in the launcher and when it appeared.
Launcher.logfrom beside the launcher or%LOCALAPPDATA%\WoWManiaLauncherNext\Launcher.log.- A screenshot showing the full launcher status/details.
- Operating system and launcher version.
- The selected game path (remove personal Windows username details if desired).
- Whether the game, launcher, antivirus, VPN/proxy, or install location recently changed.
- The name of any file repeatedly downloaded, reported corrupt, unknown, locked, or quarantined.
Never send your password, saved-credential contents, API secrets, or private authentication tokens. The launcher diagnostic data may include a machine identifier, hashed network-adapter identifiers, client hashes, account name, file lists, and installation paths; review diagnostic files before sharing them outside official support.
59 What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
Do not download executables from unofficial mirrors, bypass update hash checks, mix files from another server/client, permanently disable antivirus, delete WTF/Interface without backups, or repeatedly force-close the launcher while it is applying an update. These actions often turn a small launcher problem into a damaged client or account-security risk.
